We have examined all the tissue that was removed at the
time of surgery and, unless you were told differently we feel confident that
the procedure is complete and you are no longer pregnant. However there is always
a very rare possibility that a second pregnancy (double pregnancy) could coexist,
either in a Fallopian tube or in a corner of the uterus. Therefore we ask that you be
aware of the following:
1- Any symptoms of pregnancy that you may have had
should be gone in one week . If you are having
any symptoms after that time we like to see you. Call the office and request
an appointment. There is no charge for this visit.
2- You should get your period in 4 weeks if you are taking
Birth Control Pills, you must have some bleeding when you take last reminding pills, otherwise you can not start a new pack of pills, before being seen by our clinic . No later than 4 weeks after you stopped bleeding after your prcedure, if you are not using the pill.
If you do not get your period in the expected time, especially if you feel you
are having pregnancy symptoms, call us for an appointment, for which there will be
no charge.
3- The vast majority of women having pregnancy termination
performed at "OUR CLINICS" have had no problems. However we strongly
recommend all patients to be seen within 2 weeks for routine follow up at no
charge. We offer significantly reduced fees for Birth Control Pills, IUD, Contraceptive
shots (Depoprovera once every 3 months), Diaphragm, and/or Gynecology exams
including Pap smear. We strongly recommend taking advantage of this exclusive
after termination offer.
4- It must be understood that you had
a surgical procedure. Not unlike other types of surgery, unavoidable
complications, although rare, may occur. It is very important
that you understand what to expect and what to do if you have
any problems.
5- Remember: if you are worried, we
want to help, so always call us first. Since we are specialists
in this type of surgery we know more about the problems than
those who don't do this type of surgery.
6- We cannot be medically or financially
responsible for any care you receive except through our office.
If you wish to contact your private physician and he/she
feels that some treatment may be necessary, have him/her call
us for details of your procedure at the number listed here. Almost all the time when you consult with any other provider, they will do a D&C no matter what the problem is. Even when there is some blood clots and/or small amount of placental tissue,We never do even a simple suction without any kind of instrument, as we routinely clear this called Post Abortal Syndrome(PAS)only by Misoprostol(Cytotec), as we have done on many patients. This is a new trend to treat all spontaneous abortions(miscarriages) just by this approach and eliminated traumatic traditional Dilation and Curttage(D&C). So please never allow anyone to do any kind of surgical intervention.
Special Instructions For Problems That May Arise.
We have a 24 hour emergency phone number. If you have a temperature (over
100.4 degrees, pain, bad cramping or heavy bleeding, please call at any time.
When you call you should know the following:
- Your temperature
- The number of pads you have soaked
within the last hour
- The telephone number of a drug store
that is open when you call
For any other problems, or if you
have any other routine questions, it is best to contact us
during office hours, or in the early evening when pharmacies
in your area are still open.
INFECTION - The most important instruction
is that you take your temperature each afternoon and evening for the next five
days. If it is above 100.4 degrees call the Clinic promptly. A fever may indicate
infection and it is important that you report it at once so it can be treated.
Infection occurs infrequently but is still the most common complication seen;
it is almost always associated with fever, abdominal pain or cramps, and a smelly
discharge. Most commonly it occurs within the first week.
Most infections can be treated easily and effectively at home with proper
medication and do not routinely require hospitalization if treated early enough.
BLEEDING - excessive bleeding is a less
frequent complication than infection. The amount of bleeding following the procedure
varies greatly from woman to woman. Some may have
very little or no bleeding at all for several days, only to have the flow start
again or increase in 5-7 days. Many women will have bleeding much like a period,
which may last 3-5 days. Some women may spot for 2-4 weeks. You may pass large
or small clots, and bleeding may seem to increase when you get up or go to the
toilet. If the color is brown it is just old blood being passed. None of the
above requires any treatment unless it is very heavy or if the amount of bleeding
increases so that you are soaking one or more pads per hour, especially if the
flow is a bright color. Take a Methergine pill; this may cause some cramping
in about 20 minutes. This cramping initially may be associated with an increased
amount of bleeding (as the uterus contracts) before the bleeding slows. (You
can take a pain pill if you wish). If the bleeding doesn't slow down in an hour,
call the clinic.
Be aware that your first period after the procedure may be heavier than a
normal period, therefore save the Methergine pills, any pills left after your
first period should be thrown away.
