From your point of view, the whole process of Elective
Abortion is a question of informed decision making. Although it is a hard decision
to make, you are the only person capable of making that decision. We assume,
at this stage, that you have made the decision to proceed with an elective abortion.
Please read these two pages of information about our approach to perform your procedure, as ours totaly is atraumatic, pain free and without any instruments. That makes our technique unique without any kind of effect on your uterus (womb). This will make you more comfortable and lets you know what to expect. You will feel significantly at ease and you will not be unnecessarily anxious during the procedure.
1- After completing your forms and history, while you
are waiting to be called, you will have plenty of time to read these important
materials.
2- You will be called to the Lab to check your
blood pressure, height, weight, and determine your blood type. The Rh factor
is extremely important. Almost 85% of people are Rh positive, but 15% are Rh
negative, and require a shot of Rhogam to protect your future pregnancies. This
shot must be administered immediately after the procedure There is small fee
for this injection if the need arises. We have a special booklet for your information
if you are Rh negative.
3- If you have read these two pages, you already know a lot about the procedure,
but if you have any questions and or concerns, please ask the staff.
4- After Lab, we do a routine sonogram on all our patients to determine an
accurate dating of your pregnancy. Other clinics rely solely on their pelvic
exam but this carries a higher incidence of mistakes. We never do a procedure
without knowing roughly how far the pregnancy has progressed. The sonogram may
also enable us to determine whether the pregnancy is outside the uterus (Ectopic
Pregnancy). If the sonogram does not show pregnancy in the uterus (womb) by
both abdominal & vaginal Sonogram, and it is more than five weeks since
the first day of your last period and our office urine test is positive, we
do a blood pregnancy test. This will show the titer of hormone levels. If the
titer is lower than 2500mIU, we should wait and do the procedure at a later
time. This will make the procedure easier and reduces the chance of missing
an early pregnancy.
5- We routinely give patients Cytotec (a synthetic prostaglandin). This softens
the cervix (the opening of the uterus or womb). This has two effects: it significantly
reduces the pain; and it also makes the procedure much safer because it eliminates
the need to dilate the cervix. Dilation of the cervix is not only painful but
also carries the risk of more damage, because of bleeding both during and after
the procedure.
The number of Cytotec tablets will be between 2 and 4. The number of tablets
is determined according to the duration of your pregnancy and/or history of
C-Section and/or fibroid.
If you experience cramps or bleeding during this time, there is no cause for
concern. This problem will disappear once the procedure is completed. If you
experience bleeding at this stage, this is probably a sign that your pregnancy
had a chance of miscarriage. This medication will take 30-60 minutes to take
effect. You also take pain medication to reduce your cramps. If you need to empty your bladder, please do so at this stage.
After taking your Cytotec your decision is final, otherwise
the drug is dangerous for the fetus.
