Medical Abortion is an alternative method of terminating your unplanned pregnancy,
which can be used up to 49-63 days duration of pregnancy from the first day
of your last period. We routinely perform ultrasound on all patients undergoing
either medical and/or surgical abortion. RU486, Mifeprex(Mifeprstone)
the early option pill.
We assume that you understand the risks and possible side effects, and also
you are aware that this method is effective 92-95% of the time. Longer bleeding,
more pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea are potentially higher in medical abortion
than our suction technique.
Many studies compared the over all satisfaction from these two methods. Both
were almost identical in spite of more annoying side effects from medical abortion,
as almost all the patients were willing to try it again, if the need were to
arise in the future.
You receive the abortion pill here in the office, and in 24-48 hours after the
oral pill given here, you take all four tablets of Cytotec (misoprostal) orally (by mouth).
5% of women abort with the abortion pill alone. Even if this happens, you still need to use the four misoprostol (Cytotec) tablets orally(by mouth) to contract
the uterus (Womb), expel the tissue, and clean up the uterine cavity. About
2-6 hours after taking all Cytotec tablets by mouth, you will experience
cramps, and you will have a heavy period. The amount of bleeding and pain is
directly related to the duration of your pregnancy.
For nausea/vomiting drink plenty of fluids and eat lightly the day before and
the day you take the misoprostol pills. Avoid spicy or fried foods, which worsen
the distress. You may take over the counter medicine like Bonine (meclizine),
one tablet every 12 hours, if needed, but when you take this medicine you should
not drive, as it can cause Drowsiness. For your pain we will provide you with
pain medicine to be taken for severe cramps and pain.
As we have discussed, your return for a follow-up exam is extremely important,
and you are 100% obligated to return for a sonogram to make sure the abortion
has been done completely.
As you are aware this follow-up visit is free of charge, and cannot be ignored.
If the pregnancy continues there is danger to the fetus and to your health,
because an incomplete abortion can cause serious infections, and some life
threatening situation such as major bleeding problems, that could be extremely
difficult to treat if the process has been established.
